Stavanger, Norway - Divide roughly by 6

Hannah and I have had our first full day here in Stavanger. We began our day by checking in with the Houston/Galveston group who all arrived this morning. We got to give Ava a quick hug before she was picked up by her host family. It was great seeing her and we will see her again tomorrow.

Hannah and I decided to check out the town as we had the day free. We were given a ride into town where we first figured out the bus system and found an ATM aka a MiniBank. We grabbed some lunch and took it down to the lake where we able to watch young children feed the birds while we ate. The children here are just adorable, round cheeks, bright eyes, dressed well, many with rain boots today. After lunch Hannah was ready to head back to the dorms to go to sleep but as it was 14:00, I made her explore with me. Stavanger is on the coast so we walked down to the water and watched the boats before we walked around the town. The streets are not straight at all but wind in and out of each other, some wider than others and some quite narrow. We looked around some shops which kept us busy doing mental math. In Norway they use the kroner, which is 6.6 NOK to $1.00. We have been dividing by 6 to give us a rough estimate. In the middle of town they had a market. Some of the market tents had other country flags on them such as Great Britain or Holland. We also took a quick peak in the Cathedral before catching a bus back to our dorm.

We were playing cards and thinking about turning in early when we got a knock on our door. It was Amy's friends who invited us to join them for some Norwegian pizza. We grab our coats and walk back down to the centre of town and had some dinner. It was quite cold when we were done and the wind was blowing. We have not yet seen the sun even though it rises at 4:30 and sets at 23:00.

Godnatt!

  1. I'm worried that if I ask too many questions, the blog will become a chore. So, sufficeth to say that I am curious as to what is on a Norwegian pizza? I am imagining Nova Lox. Hannah, I hope your shoes are holding up!

  2. Apparently pizza is very popular here in Norway. I do not believe we had a typically Norwegian pizza. Hannah choice and we had a Bacon Crisp Pizza which included: bacon, taco spiced ground meat, leeks, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. Hannah's favourite part was the crust so she made sure we did not waste any of the bacon or crusts. Her shoes are holding up just fine. We have not climbed the Pulpit Rock yet so we will let you know! Love you!
